How to Feed Cold Formula to an Infant
Infant formula comes ready to use, or you can mix it from dry powder or liquid concentrate. Many parents opt to heat their infant's formula rather than use it cold. But babies can safely drink cold formula; the temperature is just a matter of preference. With the right preparation and some patience, you can get your infant to enjoy cold formula just as much as warm.
Instructions
Wash your hands to prevent any risk of infection. Pull a prepared bottle from the refrigerator at feeding time, and give it a slight shake. Run the nipple under warm water and replace it on the bottle. Often, the reason an infant rejects cold formula is that the nipple is as cold as the refrigerator. Position your baby in your arms with his head slightly higher than his body. Tilt the bottle, and make sure the nipple is full of formula. Keep the bottle at a right angle from the baby's mouth as he drinks. Prepare for your infant to refuse cold formula. Your infant is used to warm formula so they may automatically reject the cold formula due to familiarity. It is not harmful to your child to serve them cold formula, but it is a preference. When your infant refuses cold formula, ensure that the nipple of the bottle is not cold as well. Often the reason infant's reject cold formula is because the nipple on their bottle is as cold as the refrigerator. Run the nipple under warm water and replace it on the bottle before offering up the cold formula
