Ideas for Decorating a Nursery for a Newborn Baby

Welcoming a new addition to the family is very exciting. Prospective parents spend nine months dreaming of the joy that their new son or daughter will bring them. One of the most pleasant tasks of preparing for a newborn baby's arrival is decorating a nursery. A nursery will ideally serve as a place where a baby's mind can be stimulated and his or her needs met in a comforting and organized environment. Consider additional touches and working around a theme to make the experience even more pleasant.

  1. Baby Animals

    • Baby animals make an ideal theme for a newborn nursery. Small furry animals such as kittens and bunnies remind everyone of the wonders of childhood and evoke the softness of a newborn's skin. Paint the room a pastel color such as pink or blue. Place a border of pictures of bunnies around the edge of the baby's room. Hang pictures of kittens above the baby's crib. Purchase drawer pulls in the shape of chicks. Purchase a rocking chair with cushioned that have a bunny rabbit pattern. Buy bedding for the crib with printed pictures of puppies. Hang a diaper bag next to the changing table in the shape of a baby chick. Mix and match as you please.

    Trains

    • Trains are often a source of fascination for babies and children. A train makes an excellent source of inspiration when choosing decoration for a nursery. Paint the room blue or light brown to evoke the colors of trains. Create a stencil of a train to place around the edges of the room. Stencils can be purchased at many big box retailers. Purchase a rug in the shape of a train. You can make your own by sewing two blue felt rectangles and three red circles for wheels to a plain rug. Purchase doorknobs in the shape of trains. Hang striped curtains on the windows to represent a conductor's uniform.

    Flowers

    • Fashion a room full of flowers to delight your newborn. Flowers come in many shapes and colors. A floral theme can easily fit any choice of decor. Start by painting the room white. This will show off any floral designs you add. Paint flowers along the edges of the walls. If you are less than artistic, purchase flower stickers or use a stencil. Place a canopy over the newborn's crib. Tie the canopy to the bedposts with fabric flowers such as roses and tulips. Use excess floral fabric flowers to tie back curtains.
