How to Obtain Birth Records From Hungary
Birth records are legal documents that prove an individual's identity and are often required when you're applying for a passport, Social Security, driver's license, visa, naturalization or school. If you were born in Hungary and are living in the United States or if you're researching Hungarian ancestors, you can obtain birth records through the Embassy of Hungary's Consular Affairs division's offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles or New York.
Instructions
Write a letter requesting the birth record. Include the name (former or maiden name, if applicable), date of birth, place of birth (including district if in Budapest), father's name, mother's maiden name, your relationship to the person and the purpose of the request. The present-day territory of Hungary began recording civil records in 1895. If the birth occurred prior to 1895, also include the religious affiliation of the person whose record you want to find. Church records will be consulted to obtain the birth record. See which of the three Hungarian consulates in the United States handles requests from your state (see Resources), and mail your letter requesting the birth record to this office. For example, those residing in Alabama, Arkansas and 12 other states would mail the letter to the office in Washington, D.C. Enclose with your letter a money order for $69 per document (as of 2011) to cover the birth-record fees with the application, and also enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for certified mail. If you don't enclose the self-addressed envelope is provided, add a $6 fee to your total costs to cover the return of the record. Turnaround time is typically three or four months.
