Children Who Grow Up in Abusive Homes

Children of abusive homes often face challenges stemming from the difficult environment prevalent during their formative years. In addition, counselors and mental health professionals face the challenge of treating the long-term affects of an abusive upbringing. For many, alcoholism and domestic violence remain a few of the negative behavioral occurrences that plague the lives of abused children.

  1. Self Esteem

    • Children raised in abusive homes often report issues regarding self-esteem later in life. In addition, these children manifest self-esteem issues through lack of professional achievement, substance abuse issues and the inability to form healthy relationships.

    Substance Abuse

    • Many children of abusive homes exhibit substance abuse issues in both adolescence and adulthood. Without the proper treatment or coping mechanisms, long-term drug use, repeated incarceration and incidents of violence surrounding the substance abuse can plague children of abusive homes.

    Violence

    • Repeated incidents of violence, both domestic or otherwise, can often plague the children of abuse. These children mimic the activity prevalent in the home by forming abusive relationships and engaging in violent conflict in response to negative personal interaction. As a rule, many mental health professionals recommend modern treatment methods such as counseling and group discussion in addition to alternative methods such as meditation and inner focus.

    Relationships

    • Children reared in abusive homes often find difficulty in forming healthy, trusting relationships. As mentioned earlier, these children enter adulthood with fear-based esteem issues that hamper the ability to form bonds through close friendships and even supportive family ties.
