Craft Ideas for Clown Costumes for Kids

Costumes for kids get pricey, leaving many parents searching for homemade alternative versions. Creating a clown costume requires some imagination and craft ideas. The craft supplies used for a child's clown costume include face paints, clothes in sizes larger than the child, suspenders and other materials found easily around the house.

  1. Painted Faces

    • Paint the child's face with face paint. Use white paint as a base and then decorate as desired. Clowns decorate their faces in many different designs, so creating a crafty clown at home depends on the personal style of the family. Some clownish face ideas are a big red nose, a star or other geometric shape around one eye, red cheeks, enhanced red lips, raised eyebrows or circus images on the cheeks and forehead.

    Creative Leggings

    • Craft creative leggings for a little clown. Use a pair of sweatpants, stockings or loose fitting pajama pants with different sized colorful circles. The circles may be of felt, construction paper or cardboard. Attach the circles to the pants with double-sided tape for a look which you can undo or sew the circles on for a permanent look.

    Clown Collars

    • Making a clown collar is not as difficult as it may look. Use a piece of tulle; the length of tulle depends on the size of the child. Usually, 1 to 3 feet of tulle is safe. Since the tulle will be attached around the neck, measure perimeter of the neck from the nape to the front of the collarbone and back around to the nape. This ensures the tulle is not too tight on the child. Lace a piece of string or ribbon through the holes of the tulle and attach the ribbon at the back of the child's neck.

    Ribbon Suspenders

    • Use two pieces of ribbon to craft a fun pair of suspenders. Attach one end of the ribbon to the front of the pants with a safety pin. Make this look as silly as desired. String the ribbon over the child's shoulder and attach it to the back. Do the same with the other shoulder. The ribbons may be different colors, they may cross in the back, they may be decorated and they can look as silly as desired.
