How to Cancel Dependent day Care Benefits

Your company will have specific requirements you'll need to follow to cancel a flexible spending account for day care. In addition, you can only claim as much money as you put into the account and what you used for day care expenses. You'll need to know when you made the last deposit in your flexible spending account so you can claim that money.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through your employee handbook or your benefits guide to find out how your company wants to receive notification of a change in your flexible spending account.

    • 2

Document why you're eligible to make changes in your day care account. Most plans are only open for change once a year, or following specific life changes, such as the birth of a child or when a child reaches 13 years old.

    • 3

Cancel your flexible spending account before you make changes in your daycare, since you can only claim money that's been used. If you stop day care expenses and there is a lag time to cancel your account, you will not be able to claim the money deposited into your account.

    • 4

Keep a copy of all of your paperwork. Regardless of how your company wants your flexible spending account changes made, through fax, email or written request, keep copies for your own records in case of a discrepancy.

    • 5

Verify that your account was canceled by checking your pay stub. You should see your income increase by the amount you had been depositing into your flexible spending account.

    • 6

Claim the remaining money in your day care account once you verify the deposits are canceled. Date your claim form for the time you purchased day care and send in the proper receipts before March, or the balance of the account goes to the government.
