How to Organize Children's Weekly Homework
Homework is often as much work for mom and dad as it is for the kids. You want your child to be organized on his own, but most kids need at least a little nudge from parents when it comes to homework and studying. Coming up with a homework organizational system helps you stay on top of his latest assignments. This ensures he gets all of his work turned in on time so his grades don't slip. Laying the organizational framework early in the school year sets him on the course to success.
Things You'll Need
- Calendar
Instructions
Meet with the teacher to ask about homework frequency and expectations. If you're lucky, the teacher will assign similar homework on the same days each week. If homework varies, ask how often you should expect homework. This allows you to anticipate upcoming assignments and due dates. Designate space and time for homework every day. If you get into a routine, you are better able to keep track of assignments and ensure your child completes the work. Keep distractions to a minimum, and keep school supplies handy in the homework area. Hang a calendar for tracking homework assignments, projects and tests. Mark the due dates for any homework that your child brings home. Help your child refer to this calendar if he has several assignments. Review your child's assignment book or folder that comes home from school each day. Check for new assignments. Review the instructions with her to be sure she understands what she should do. Monitor his progress as he works on the assignments. Help him stay on track if he gets distracted. Using a timer and giving him frequent breaks is one way to motivate him to continue working. Check her work when the homework is complete. Have her look at any mistakes she needs to correct. If she missed several problems, go over the concept with her again to make sure she understands it. Hand the work back to your child to put in his backpack when it is finished. Getting the homework back to school is his responsibility, but you can help by helping him keep track of the papers at home. Communicate with the teacher regularly to ensure your child is turning in his homework assignments. Ask her to alert you if he misses several assignments so you can work on organization and responsibility between home and school.
