Instructions
Determine your budget before venturing out to purchase fishing gear for your child. Realize that quality gear will make fishing more enjoyable, but your child will quickly outgrow child-size gear and need larger equipment. Select a rod and reel combination set for a beginner fisherman. Choose a push-button, or spin-cast, reel for the easiest casting -- especially for children under age 6. Pick a more durable spinning reel for children who can practice frequently and for older kids. Select a rod that measures between 5 and 7 feet, is made from durable material and has a flexible tip. Purchase the proper rod and reel combination for salt- or freshwater fishing. Choose a few accessories to accompany your child̵7;s rod and reel. Select a split-shot sinker to weigh down the line to keep it submerged in the water. Use a heavy sinker for water with a strong current. Attach a float, known as a bobber, so your child can see when a fish is pulling on the line. Use a small hook, such as a size 8, to enable your child to catch more fish. Choose a tackle box that closes tightly, is made from sturdy material and has several divided compartments inside. Store your child̵7;s fishing gear in his tackle box. Add various baits, such as plastic worms to catch bass; jig heads and bodies to catch panfish; and bottom sinkers to attract catfish. Dig up some worms from the backyard to use as live bait when fishing. Bring your child with you to purchase her life vest to have her try it on and ensure a proper fit. Select other gear to help make a fishing outing successful, like clothing with built-in SPF and insect repellent, sunglasses and needle-nose pliers.
