One of the many aspects of a caregiver's job is to follow health and safety policies at their place of learning. It is important to teach preschoolers how to be healthy and safe, as they are both vital lessons that children will carry with them through adulthood.

Hand Washing

Hand washing stops the spread of germs and is the foundation for keeping preschoolers healthy. Teach children how to properly wash their hands. Wash hands before eating or cooking, after using the bathroom, after handing school pets, after playing outside, after coughing or sneezing and after playing with sensory items like sand.
Eating Healthy

Preschoolers need to practice healthy eating habits. Teach children which foods are healthy and which foods are not. Eat and cook healthy foods with the children.
Exercise and Rest

Preschoolers need to exercise and rest everyday. Exercise gets the heart pumping and strengthens the muscles. Rest is essential for brain development and growth.
Safety

Keep all learning areas, both indoor and outdoor, safe and child-proofed. Adhere to the state's adult-to-child ratio. Have updated first-aid supplies and family contact information.
Practicing Safety Procedures

Preschoolers should practice safety procedures, like fire drills, often. As they become more routine, children will be more cooperative and less nervous. For example, taking children on regular walks will get the children used to lining up, following directions and staying together.
