How to Block Internet Sites From Children

Knowing what and where your children are surfing on the Internet is a responsibility that falls to all parents and in-charge adults. A national survey conducted in 2005 by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that over one-third of youth Internet users saw sexual material online that they did not want to see. Prevention is key when it comes to safety of children online. However, it proves difficult to control what children, especially older children, look at on the Internet without the aid of some software or device. These types of Internet-control software actively block websites and content you specify.

Instructions

  1. Using Internet Explorer

    • 1

Open the Internet Explorer browser. Click on "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu.

    • 2

Click on the "Content" tab in the Internet Options box. Select "Enable" under the Content Advisor section to open the box for setting content controls and restricted websites.

    • 3

Click on the "Approved Sites" tab in the Content Advisor box. Type in the web address of the website that you want to block from your children in "Allow this website:" box. Click the "Never" button, indicating that it will never be allowed, and to add it to the list of disapproved websites. Click "Apply" in the lower right-hand corner.

    • 4

Click the "General" tab in the Content Advisor box. Check the box that allows the "Supervisor" to create a password to allow users to view restricted websites. Click the "Change Password" button and enter a password for the "Supervisor." Click "Apply" in the Content Advisor box.

    Using Wireless Routers

    • 5

Type the IP (Internet protocol) address of your wireless router into your Internet browser. Enter the username and password required to enter the administration site of your wireless router.

    • 6

Click on the "Access Restrictions" section of your wireless router's settings to create a new policy that will block websites from children. Select an Internet access policy number and type in a name for it. For example, type in "Restricted Sites" if creating a policy that blocks websites.

    • 7

Choose the specific computers for which the website-blocking policy is being set. Enter the MAC address for each computer system. Select the days and specific times for when the policy will be in effect.

    • 8

Enter the specific URLs for the websites you want to restrict access to in the website-blocking section of the policy details. Use the keyword section to restrict access to websites based on the keywords used. For example, enter "pornography" for all websites that use this word in their website address or content. Click the "Save" button to save the Internet policy on your router.
