Memory Problems in Children
Poor memory can interfere with a child's academic performance, lead to mishaps, such as forgetting a jacket, or even be a sign of developmental amnesia. Fortunately, there are ways to help a child remember things more often.
-
Learning
-
Children with poor grades are often considered to be less intelligent, but many children with poor grades simply have poor memory.
Success
-
Children with poor memory can still be successful--if they learn how to compensate for their poor memory by jotting down ideas.
Biological Basis
-
Children with poor memory may have developmental amnesia. Developmental amnesia is linked to damage of the hippocampus, a part of the brain associated with long-term memory. This type of brain damage can be caused by a loss of oxygen to the brain, possibly from a premature birth or a seizure. Children with developmental amnesia are sometimes forgetful.
Auditory Recall
-
Children can develop better memory by repeating what they are told and by explaining what they are supposed to remember back to someone.
Rhyming
-
Children have an easier time remembering rhymes than they do remembering prose. Information is also easier to remember if that information is tied to a story or related to something the child already knows.
Memory Problems are Common
-
Smaller children usually have difficulty remembering some things. Speak with a pediatrician if you are unsure of whether or not your child's memory is normal.
