Language Development of a 7-Year-Old

As a parent, it is important to understand the language development of your child. When your child is 7, he should be at certain points of his language development. In order to be sure that he is progressing correctly, you will want to evaluate your child's language development.

  1. Consonants and Sounds

    • Your child should have mastered most of the sounds of the English language. She should have mastered the consonants "s" and" z," as well as "r." These three consonants are usually among the last that children master, so she should have already been able to use the rest of them, although she might not do them all correctly all the time. She should also be able to master the voiceless "th," the "ch" sound, the "wh" sound, and the soft "Gs," as in George.

    Opposites

    • Your child should be good at handling opposites. He should be able to tell you the difference between such opposites as girl and boy, man and woman, flies and swims, short and long, blunt and sharp, and sweet and sour.     • Another important part of language development is understanding and using terms. Your child should understand and be able to use such terms as alike, beginning, different and end. These are terms that are not usually understood before age 7, so many children will have this development occur during their seventh year.

    Time

    • By the time your child is 7 , she should be able to tell time. She should have mastered the hours and the half hours. By 7, she should also know how to tell time to the quarter hour. This can be a difficult task for some children, so be sure that you give your child chances to learn how to tell time and explain to her things that she does not know.

    Reading and Writing

    • Your child also should have had much language development in the form of written language. He should be able to read simple sentences and have a good grasp on reading, although children's reading levels vary depending on their skill level. He should also be able to write or print several different words. He should be able to make guesses as to how to spell difficult words.
