Sharks have multiple ways of giving birth to their babies. They can lay eggs outside of the body like many other fish in the sea. Sharks can also lay eggs within the body. In addition, baby sharks can be nurtured and grown in the body like many mammal births.

A baby shark is referred to as a "pup." Each egg that it inhabits is encased in what's called a "mermaid's purse," or a protective pouch for it to inhabit. Shark babies do have a tongue, and it's referred to as the "basihyal."
