How to Pull Baby Teeth
Primary teeth, or baby teeth, start to develop when the baby is still a fetus. The teeth will start to break through the gums of the child between the ages of four to 12 months. As the child begins to develop, the roots of the baby teeth will begin to dissolve. When the child is about six or seven years old, the baby teeth will loosen and fall out making room for "big kid teeth," their permanent adult teeth. Pulling baby teeth is necessary for most children, as most children's teeth do not simply fall out. However, there is a proper way to pull the baby teeth to make the process much easier.
Things You'll Need
- Soap and water
- Tissue
- Children's ibuprofen
Instructions
Encourage your child to wiggle lose teeth with his tongue or clean fingers. When the root is almost dissolved the tooth will become lose. Wiggling the tooth will help to loosen it further. Allow a very lose tooth several days to fall out on it's own. If it has been a several days, or the adult tooth is starting to break through the gum behind the tooth, the tooth can be pulled by the child. Wash your child's hand well to prevent any dirt or bacteria from getting into his mouth. Place a tissue over the tooth with the child pinching the tooth in between the thumb and forefinger. Tell your child to gently start twisting the tooth. Twist the tooth until is has broken away from the gums. This should not be a painful process, but swelling of the gums can occur. In this case, give your child two children's ibuprofen to ease the swelling. Tell your child to place the tooth under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy.
