How to Talk to a 5-Year-Old Girl
For people without children and even for those who spent decades parenting, talking to a child can challenge their conversational abilities. A 5-year-old girl poses specific problems. She's right on the brink of childhood yet still retains a little of her babyhood. With a little forethought and concentration during the interaction, you can converse with that little girl in a manner that is comfortable and pleasant for you both.
Instructions
Engage in imaginative talk and play. Five-year-old girls cling to fantasy even as they separate reality from pretend. They often have a defined sense of gender as well, so stick to fantasy ideas they can relate to, such as princesses, castles and fairies. Ask them about what they have been doing, especially things you know they're accomplishing. A 5-year-old girl may like to tell you about how she's learning to read or about the picture she painted yesterday. Kindergarten children often feel proud of their abilities; show them that you care by asking about their accomplishments. Ask questions and converse naturally, as you would with a friend. HealthyChildren.org notes that girls of any age tend to desire conversation and relationships more than boys do. It's more important to a little girl to converse with you rather than to win an argument or have her opinion recognized as correct. Direct your conversation with her accordingly so she doesn't feel threatened or intimidated.
