What Is the Importance of a Positive Role Model?

Positive role models are important for everyone as someone to look up to, but they are especially important for children because role models help your child decide what type of person she will become. Positive role models can be found anywhere: school, church, next door or right in your own home.

    • Kids and teenagers have a knack for watching others and mimicking their behaviors, whether that be a parent, teacher, sibling or peer. They look to role models for guidance in life and take cues from them regarding everything from work ethic to education to how they spend their free time and how they react toward others. Positive role models are important because they give children someone respectable to look up to.

    • Children spend much of their day out of the home, making positive role models at school so important. Teachers, staff, librarians, sports coaches and leaders of school clubs can be wonderful role models for children. If you work with children, focus on being the best person you can be knowing a child is watching how you act and react to every sort of situation. Avoid using profanity and angry words and be respectful of others.

    • If you are looking for a positive role model, look to your community for such an individual. For instance, get your child involved in community service programs or food drives offered at your church to show the child the importance of giving back to the community and helping others. Neighbors and friends can be good role models for children as can the instructors and other adult workers at your local recreation center.

    How to Be a Good Role Model

    • Teach by example and give your children a positive person to look up to. Be a kind, loving, respectful, giving and passionate person when around your children to show you are worthy of being a good role model. Avoid drinking heavily, cursing, yelling or shouting and gossiping about others. Instead, show that you enjoy helping your friends and family, be mature and responsible and cut back on bad habits such as smoking when around your children.
