How to Make a Ruler Growth Chart for Children
A traditional growth chart usually appears on a wall in your house where you mark your child's growth on his birthday each year. Rather than mark up a wall, create a ruler growth chart. Using a piece of wood, create a large ruler, placing a photo of your child next to his height on his birthday each year. This way, you create not only an interesting decoration for your home, but also a way to record your child's annual growth.
Things You'll Need
- 1-by-8 wooden board, 6 feet long
- Walnut stain
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
- Pen
- Ruler
- Paint pen
Instructions
Add a coat of stain with the paintbrush to the wooden board. Allow it to dry and then add a second coat. Let it dry up to six hours. Use the ruler and pencil to mark off 1-inch intervals along the length of the board. Look at your ruler for style and length of lines. For example, quarter-inch lines should be 2 inches long while the eighth-inch lines are shorter at 1 inch long. If you plan to hang the ruler, begin at 6 inches, making up for the first 6 inches with the space from the floor to the ruler. Use the pen and paint pen to darken in the lines. Add large numbers at each major interval for feet. Allow the paint to dry. Hang the ruler on the wall, using the measuring tape so its height corresponds to actual height. Line your child up against the ruler and take his photo. Develop or print the photo and hang it next to the corresponding height. Repeat this process each year.
