How to Help Preschoolers Understand Rainbow Colors Through Play
"What color is that flower, mommy?" Teach your curious preschooler about the world of colors through daily activities and games that will reinforce her knowledge about each shade of the rainbow. Instructions
Color Hopscotch
Cut 1-foot squares out of colored poster board or large sheets of construction paper. Tape them onto the floor in a hopscotch pattern. Start with red at one end of the pattern and work toward purple at the other end of the rainbow. Cut 6-inch squares of colored paper to create a colored die. Tape the squares onto all sides of a small square box. If you don̵7;t have a square box handy, create one by taping together two long strips of overlapping cardboard. Show your preschooler how to throw the die to choose a color. Have your child hop to that color on the hopscotch pattern. Help her say each color as she hops past it. Continue rolling the die and hopping through the colors. Rainbow Scavenger Hunt
Draw or download an outline of the rainbow. Have your child color in each line with crayons or markers. Quiz her on the name of each color while you label the rainbow sections. Draw a colored check box next to each line of the rainbow. Use contact paper to cover the front and back of the rainbow drawing. Find a dry-erase marker to make the drawing reusable. Take an outdoor adventure walk with your child. Have her search for each color on the rainbow and check it off on her drawing. When you finish the list, quiz her on what she saw for each color she checked.
