Children's Craft With Blueberries
Blueberries are round berries that range in color from blue-purple to blue-black. According to the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, blueberries are high in antioxidants, vitamin C and dietary fiber making them beneficial to your health and well-being. Summertime is a great time for a blueberry-themed teaching unit for children.

Blueberry Watercolors
-
To make watercolor paint out of blueberries, mash 1/2 cup of berries into 1/2 cup of water. Use a coffee filter or piece of cheesecloth to strain the seeds from the mixture. Discard seeds and have children use an artist's brush to paint any picture they like.
Frozen Blueberry Pops
-
Have children help make frozen blueberry pops by blending together 1 cup of blueberry juice, 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries and 1 cup of yogurt (plain or vanilla works best). Pour the mixture into a pop mold and freeze for at least two hours. Remove from the mold and enjoy!
Basket of Blueberries
-
Give each child a blank piece of white paper and blue finger paint. Have them dip their fingers into the paint and make "berries" on the center of the paper. Once the paint has dried, have children glue wooden craft sticks in a basket weave pattern over the blueberries, and voilà, they have a basket of blueberries!
Berry Pots
-
Berry pots require only a small clay pot, some blue play dough, glue and glitter paint. Give each child a small clay pot and a piece of play dough. Instruct them to make enough "berries" out of the play dough to fill the pot. Next, place a dab of glue onto the bottom of each berry and layer them into the pot until it is full. Allow to air dry for at least 24 hours. Once dry, paint the berries with blue glitter paint to make them sparkle.
Blueberry Playdough
-
Make blue play dough that smells like berries.
Combine:
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tbsp cream of tartar
1 envelope unsweetened juice crystals
1 cup water
1 Tbsp vegetable oilIn a medium saucepan, mix together all ingredients except vegetable oil. Once combined, stir in oil. Mix over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes or until dough forms a ball. Remove from heat. Once cool enough to touch, knead dough until soft. Store in an airtight container.
Blueberry Pie Craft
-
Give each child a piece of paper pre-printed with the outline of a piece of blueberry pie. Have them color the crust brown. Then, have them make berries by rolling up little pieces of blue tissue paper and gluing them in place. Surprise your little crafters with a real piece of blueberry pie once they are done.
