Preschool Poems About Triangles

What has three sides and three points? Help your preschooler remember his shapes with a poem about the triangle. Preschoolers often mix up the two "angle" shapes: a triangle with a rectangle, so use the repetition and rhythm of a poem to help him separate the two in his memory. Add to the poems with drumming, movement or singing to reinforce the lesson on shapes.

  1. Name that Triangle

    • Personalize your triangle with a name. The alliteration within a poem will help preschoolers to remember the title of a triangle. With "Tommy Triangle," recite "I'm Tommy Triangle; look at me; count my sides; there's 1-2-3!" The simple rhythm and vocabulary are well-suited for a young mind. Chant through another alliteration poem with a female triangle this time: "Tilly Triangle is here to see you. She has three sides and three points, too."

    Poems Set to Music

    • Sometimes a concept is more memorable if it is fit into a tune. Set a poetry stanza into a familiar preschool nursery song to help your child remember it. To the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel," sing "I am a small triangle; I have three sides you see;
      I also have three corners; they're just right for me." Another nursery song, "Frere Jacques," lends itself to reciting triangle facts with its repetitive melody. Fit in the stanza: "This is a triangle, this is a triangle. How can you tell? How can you tell? It only has three sides that join to make three points."

    Poems about Drawing a Triangle

    • Remind a preschooler how to draw a triangle with instructions fit into a poem. While he follows along with a fat crayon or marker, chant together, "One, two, three; one, two, three. Do you see? Do you see? Up the hill and to the top, down the hill--and then you stop; straight across; tell me what have you got? A triangle!" Use the poem to show your child how to draw triangles of many sizes and dimensions.

    Poems with Hand Motions

    • Have your preschooler act out the shape of a triangle with his arms. By engaging muscle groups during learning, he can awaken his kinesthetic memory. Show your tot how to draw a triangle in the air while reciting, "Triangles, triangles, have three sides; you can draw big triangles in the air; it is fun to use your hands and make them anywhere." If you have at least three preschoolers, line them up on the ground to create a group triangle with their bodies while they chant "We've got three corners and three sides; see our sides with your eyes. We got three corners and three sides, We're a triangle!"
