Kids and Water Sprinklers

A majority of summertime is spent outside playing. When a pool is not accessible to cool down during a hot day, sprinklers are a great alternative. Whether playing in sprinklers that are incorporated into the landscape of a yard or purchasing a kid's water sprinkler, kids can spend hours playing in the water.

  1. Selecting a Sprinkler

    • Numerous options of sprinklers can be purchased to hook up to a hose. Let your child help pick the sprinkler. Some sprinklers are straightforward, just squirting water, while others spin. Younger kids who are afraid of these sprinklers are just as happy using sprinklers that are a part of the existing landscape. Older children may want a sprinkler that has a small pool or slide attached. Remember, kids will have fun without a fancy sprinkler. Playing in the water is fun.

    Games

    • Kids can play games while playing in the sprinklers. This is a perfect time to use water guns because they will already be wet. Set some chairs draped with towels around the yard for the kids to hide behind while squirting each other with their water guns. You can also give the kids cups to fill up with water from the sprinklers and dump on one another. The games can be lighthearted and fun; there is no need to have a winner. Kids will start playing a game and make changes as they go.

    Water Conservation

    • Having sprinklers running all afternoon can cause parents to dread the size of their water bill the next month. Turn the sprinklers on and off throughout the afternoon while the children are playing. They can squirt each other with water guns or throw water balloons at each other while waiting for the sprinkler to come back on. Blow up a small pool for them to play in while the water is off. You can even make a game out of filling it up, giving each kid a pail to fill with water from the sprinkler and then transport it to the pool.

    Sun

    • Kids may not feel the heat of the sun while cooling down in the sprinklers. Remember to apply waterproof sunscreen and reapply throughout the sprinkler play session. If they are spending a lot of time outside, it is a good idea for them to wear a long-sleeve T-shirt over their swimsuit for extra sun protection.

    Safety

    • Safety is always a major concern with water and children. Make sure kids are supervised whenever they are playing in the water. If buckets or other large containers of water have been filled during sprinkler play, be sure to empty them. Young children can easily drown in just a few inches of water. Kids should also be careful not to run on wet cement, which becomes slippery when wet. Make sure kids are drinking plenty of water while playing in the water. The heat will cause them to become dehydrated quickly if they are not drinking enough liquids. It is easy to forget to drink water because they are playing with the water.
