Support Groups for a Mother's Loss in Premature Births

For mothers who are dealing with the pain of losing a child due to premature birth, turning to a support group -- where they can speak with others who are in similar situations -- might be the best way to cope. There are both local and national organizations ready to offer support, from visiting you in the hospital to holding a remembrance ceremony for your lost child.

  1. MEND

    • Mommies Enduring Neonatal Death is a Christian, nonprofit organization located in Irving, Texas, that supports mothers who have lost a child to premature birth, stillbirth or miscarriage. The organization hosts monthly support groups, primarily in Texas, and has chapters in Kansas, Missouri, Washington and Oklahoma. MEND holds two commemorative ceremonies each year and publishes a bi-monthly newsletter that features resources and encouraging stories.

    HAND

    • Helping After Neonatal Death provides a network of volunteers, parents and professionals to help those who have suffered the loss of a child before, after or during birth. HAND supports mothers and fathers located in northern and central California. Services that HAND provides include support over the phone, hospital visits by volunteers, support groups, newsletters and remembrance services.

    SHARE

    • SHARE is a national organization whose mission is to serve those who have been affected by the loss of a child during pregnancy or early life, or from a stillbirth. SHARE sends a packet of information about local resources and support groups in the recipient's area, as well as the "Sharing" newsletter. SHARE's annual Angel Ball raises money for the organization and recognizes infants who died. SHARE hosts the annual Walk for Remembrance and Hope on Oct. 1 -- National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Each participant receives a T-shirt with the name of the child she lost. SHARE hosts training seminars for professionals and volunteers who work with those coping with a loss.
