How to Get the Depo Shot
Depo-Provera is an injectable form of birth control. It contains a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and is effective in preventing pregnancy if administered accurately. Depo-Provera works by thickening the mucosal wall of cervix, making it more difficult for sperm to enter and by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary. The effects of one injection will last for three months, and any woman taking Depo-Provera should be closely monitored by her doctor.
Instructions
Set up an appointment with your gynecologist. The Depo-Provera shot can only be administered by a health care professional. Discuss all of your birth control options, including the Depo-Provera shot and any possible side effects of the medication, such as irregular periods, possible weight gain, depression and headaches. Set up an appointment with your gynecologist within the five days after your last menstrual cycle to receive the first Depo-Provera shot. The shot is generally administered in the buttocks or upper arm. The medication sits in a pool and is slowly released into the body over a period of three months. The doctor may also administer a pregnancy test before injecting Depo-Provera to ensure that you are not already pregnant. Schedule an appointment to have the next shot 12 weeks later. It is important that the shot is administered on a regular schedule to ensure its effectiveness. The Depo-Provera injection will not protect against pregnancy if it is administered five days after this 12 week cut off point.
