Personal Grants for Single Mothers
There are many websites that offer assistance in obtaining "free grants for single moms." Unfortunately, these sites are looking for a fee to help women find scholarship and grant opportunities. The government does award several grant opportunities for single mothers looking to open a new business, receive an education or return to school, or for specific training. These opportunities do not require an application fee. While these types of grants can provide significant financial assistance to single moms, the money awarded only can be used for the specified purpose. So, if a mother applies for an education grant, she only can use it on education expenses -- not childcare costs, living expenses or food costs.

The most common type of grant awarded to the most financially disadvantaged students are Pell Grants. By filling out the free FAFSA (www.fafsa.org) form online, a single mother's application will be evaluated by the Department of Education to determine if she qualifies for a Pell Grant or similar financial grant. In addition, there are various states and universities that offer grants specifically for single mothers. A single mom looking to attend college should check with the school, and also look for grants aimed at specific areas of study.
Also, a group called Raise the Nation focuses specifically on grants and scholarships for single mothers.
