How to Get a Birth Certificate for a Newborn

When you have a newborn baby, it is important to obtain a birth certificate as soon as possible. Your health insurance company may require a copy of the birth certificate to insure the baby. As your child grows, you will need a copy of the birth certificate to enroll him in school and get a passport. When you gave birth to your baby, the hospital presented you with forms requiring information about you and your baby. The hospital then forwards these forms to your state's vital records department. The vital records department is responsible for keeping records of birth, death, marriage and divorce.

      Go to your state's vital records department. You can find the location of your states vital records department by checking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (see Resources).

      Fill out a form requesting a certified copy of your baby's birth certificate. Each state requires you to enter the full name stated on the birth certificate, the birth date, place of birth and the mother's full name. Only parents and immediate family can obtain a copy of a birth certificate.

      Show proof that you are an authorized person to receive a copy of the birth certificate. Depending on your state's law, a valid I.D. may only be required.

      Pay the searching fee. Each state charges a searching fee for obtaining a copy of a birth certificate. This price varies by state. Some states do not accept credit or debit cards as a form of payment.

      Receive the copy of your newborn's birth certificate. Most states require a few hours to search and print the birth certificate.

      Print and complete the application form. Some states require that the form is signed in front of a notary.
