Stomachaches From Teething
Although some babies show few signs of discomfort, teething in young children often comes with unpleasant and hard-to-detect side effects, and stomachaches are one of them. Not all children display signs of stomach pain, but if it is detected, it is usually mild and dissipates as soon as the tooth comes in. Teething children are typically unhappy and uncomfortable, so it's important to make them as comfortable as possible and feed them simple, easily digested foods until the pain subsides.

Causes
-
The increase in saliva is attributed to a child's upset stomach, resulting most commonly in mild diarrhea. Because a baby can't communicate what hurts, parents are left to piece together clues to determine the cause of a child's unhappiness. Many parents blame teething for common signs of illness, such as fever or diarrhea. In many cases, they are correct, but there are times when the other signs of illness are merely coincidental or are caused by a different illness.
Signs of Teething
-
Teething is a milestone for children. Although it differs depending on the child, teething commonly occurs from 4 months to two years old. To determine whether a child's stomachache is caused from teething, look for other telltale teething signs. These include drooling, a rash around the mouth, a runny nose (with clear mucus), general irritability, mild fever, disturbed sleep and swollen, red gums.
Signs of Teething Stomachache
-
A child may vomit or spit up a small amount, although more common signs of teething stomach pain are loose stools or mild diarrhea. If a child does spit up, it is generally clear or white in color. Spitup may occur just after eating, but if it's associated with teething it should not be a large amount. If these signs of stomach distress are present along with one or more of the teething signs listed above, it is probably all related to teething.
How to Ease
-
Offer your child fluids regularly during teething, as mouth pain often leads to less consumption and higher rates of dehydration. To ease a teething stomachache along with other pain, give your child a popsicle. The cold helps relieve pain and swelling while the water and juices keep the child hydrated. With stomach pain, stick to simple, easily digested food, such as bananas, rice, dry toast, applesauce and yogurt. These foods will also help slow down diarrhea and vomiting.
Warnings
-
If your child vomits heavily, has discolored vomit (anything dark in color), has severe diarrhea, a fever above 102 degrees or misses meals due to stomach pain, this may be the sign of a virus or another form of illness. In any of these cases, contact your doctor.
