Infant CPR Instructions

Nothing is scarier than turning to your child and realizing he can't breathe. So what do you do? Don't panic! Take a deep breath and begin administering CPR. Not sure how to go about doing that? Here's how.

  1. Shout and Tap

    • Before you begin, shout and tap your child on the shoulder to make sure he isn't breathing. If there's no response, lay him down on his back.

    Open the Airway

    • Open the airway by tilting your child's head slightly back and pulling his chin down to open the mouth.

    Give Two Gentle Breaths

    • If your child isn't breathing, place your mouth over his mouth and nose, and give two gentle breaths. Each breath should only be a second long.

    Give 30 Compressions

    • Using two or three fingers, give 30 gentle, quick chest compressions in the center of the chest just below the nipples. Press lightly down about one-third of the chest's depth.

    Repeat

    • Repeat two breaths and 30 compressions for two minutes in cycles. If there's still no response, call 911. Continue giving breaths and compressions while you wait for the paramedics.
