Baby Door Bouncer Safety
Baby door bouncers are jumpers that enable babies to jump on their toes. The bouncers' springs enable easy attachment to door frames and locking mechanisms secure bouncers in place. When using bouncers, babies are upright, get exercise, practice controlled movement and have fun. Some of the popular companies that manufacture bouncers are Graco, Sassy, Evenflo and Combi. Parents and caregivers need to follow safety guidelines when caring for a child in a bouncer.

Child Requirements
-
Make sure that your baby is age and weight appropriate for using the bouncer. Bouncers require that babies be able to hold up their own heads unassisted; this usually occurs around 4 months of age. The bouncers are suitable until babies begin to walk or when they reach a maximum of 24 to 25 pounds. It is unsafe for babies to swing, spin or sleep in bouncers.
Installation
-
Read the instruction manual that comes with your bouncer and follow all installation directions carefully. Clamp the bouncer only on appropriate door frames; most bouncers require doorways to have firmly attached trim or molding at least 1/2 inch thick on both sides to ensure bouncer security and stability. Bouncers are meant for indoor use and are not safe to mount near stairs. Failure to set up bouncers properly can result in injury.
Height Adjustments
-
The height of bouncers will need to be adjusted as babies grow. Babies should only have their toes touch the floor when in bouncers; at this height, babies can balance and easily push off the floor to bounce. Babies could become injured if they stand in bouncers with their feet flat on the floor. Never adjust the height of a bouncer or move it to another location while occupied.
Clear Surroundings
-
Make sure that bouncers can move about freely and not become entangled in any cords. Test the stability of the molding before each use by pulling down on the straps under the clamps. Ensure that the areas around bouncers are free from obstructions. Refrain from allowing other children to play near bouncers that are being used. Never leave babies unsupervised while they are using bouncers. Always remove bouncers from doorways when they are not being used.
Additional Precautions
-
Only purchase bouncers that have never been used; second-hand bouncers can be weakened or damaged and can cause injury. Check bouncers regularly for loose or damaged parts; discard any bouncers that could be hazardous to children. Do not let babies eat or drink while using bouncers. Only allow babies to use bouncers for the recommended time noted in the manufacturer's instruction manuals; exceeded time in bouncers can cause fatigue, leg strain, over-activity, spinning, swinging or sleeping.
