How to Hold a Baby on Your Hip
After having a baby, you will build strong muscles from carrying your little one around frequently. While your baby is young and tiny, your carrying style will need to support her head and neck sufficiently. As your baby gets older and stronger, the way you carry your baby will change, because she will be strong enough to carry on your hip.
Things You'll Need
- Baby sling (optional)
Instructions
Without Baby Sling
Place your hands under your baby̵7;s armpits, with your thumbs on your baby̵7;s chest and your fingers splayed across his back. Lift your baby as you straighten your legs, if necessary. Position your baby so her legs straddle your hip, with one leg crossing the front of your body and the other leg crossing the back of your body. Position your baby̵7;s bottom on the jut of your hip to support it. Circle your arm around your baby̵7;s body and grasp the thigh of the leg that crosses the front of your body. As you circle your arm around your baby, bring her in close to carry her. With Baby Sling
Place the baby sling over one shoulder and over your head. Situate the rings of the sling on the front of your shoulder and place the pouch of the sling across your body on your opposite hip. Insert your baby̵7;s legs through the pouch of the sling and position her on your hip, with the sling fabric under her bottom and around her body. Position your baby so she straddles your hip. Spread the sling fabric across her body so it supports her bottom, thighs and back. Tighten the sling by pulling the tail through the rings. As you tighten, arrange the fabric so it spans from the backs of your baby̵7;s knees to her upper body. Your baby can keep her arms out of the sling, or she could tuck them in if she prefers.
