How to Dispose of a Crib
Options for getting rid of your crib depend on its age and design. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, occasionally updates crib safety standards and regulations, so determine whether yours meets current rules by reviewing CPSC information. In 2011, there were sweeping changes to crib safety standards for the first time in 30 years, which included banning drop-side models, so many cribs manufactured prior are obsolete. Dispose of outdated cribs, as they cannot legally be offered or sold for reuse. If your crib meets current safety standards and is still in good shape, find a way it can benefit another family.

Disposal of Outdated Cribs
Contact your local recycling center and ask whether your used crib can be recycled. If so, ask if they'll pick it up or, if not, where you should bring it. Call your local solid waste collection agency and ask if your weekly garbage collection truck will pick up an intact or disassembled crib. If not, follow their instructions for scheduling a bulk load or furniture disposal pickup. Take your crib apart as best you can if necessary for recycling or garbage collection. Locate the screws and joints that hold the sides, base and legs together. Unscrew them all and break the crib down to the smallest pieces possible. Bind them with twine if directed to do so by your local recycling or solid waste collection agency. Even if they didn't mention this, it makes carrying and transport much easier. Reusing Up-to-Date Cribs
Decide whether you want to sell your used crib or if you're willing to give it away, perhaps to help a family in need. Contact Goodwill, area churches or other groups that take donated furniture and and ask whether they accept used cribs if you're willing to give yours away. Many will pick up the crib for you, and often you can get a receipt for a tax deduction as an added bonus. Post online ads on Craigslist and other community sites that allow you to offer items as giveaways or for sale. Add pictures to help people decide whether they want the crib. Specify if you require that someone come pick the crib up from your house.
