How to Make a Baby's First Stocking

A baby's first stocking is a special keepsake that you and your baby will treasure for many years to come. You can purchase a stocking, but making your own will make it all the more special to you both. With all the different designs and styles available, there are literally dozens of ways to make a stocking. However, the instructions for a basic stocking with a traditional design serve as the foundation for all the others. You can innovate on the design if you want to make a new stocking as your child grows.

Things You'll Need

  • Craft paper
  • Fabric marker
  • Red velvet, flannel or fleece
  • White faux fur
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • White thread
  • Red thread
  • White glue
  • Glitter

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the design of your stocking on craft paper. You can create a smaller stocking to reflect the fact that it is for a baby, or you can create a full-sized stocking. If you have trouble making the stocking shape for your pattern, get out one of your family's other stockings and trace it.

    • 2

Cut out your pattern and trace it on the back side of your fabric with a fabric marker. Cut two pieces for your stocking. A red velvet, fleece, or flannel will create a traditional look and will be durable. These fabrics are also easier to work with since they do not fray.

    • 3

Cut out two cuff pieces from your faux fur that are the same width as your stocking and twice the depth you desire.

    • 4

Fold each cuff piece to halve the depth. Iron the fold.

    • 5

Sew the stocking together while holding the "right" sides together. The side you see while you are sewing is what will be the inside of the stocking.

    • 6

Turn the stocking out so that the seams are on the inside. Iron all the seams to flatten them.

    • 7

Sew both sides of the cuff together, creating a loop.

    • 8

Slip the ring inside the top of the stocking with the white furry side of the cuff on the outside. Sew the top of the cuff to the top of the stocking. When you fold the cuff out and over the sides of the stocking, the furry side will show, but the seams will not.

    • 9

"Write" your baby's name in glue on the front of the white cuff.

    • 10

Sprinkle glitter in the color of your choice over the glue writing and allow it to dry.

    • 11

Shake off the excess glitter once the glue has dried.
