How to Add Cereal to Formula for Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux is commonly seen in infants. When an infant experiences this reflux, food backs up. If your baby has reflux, you can help him keep his food down by adding cereal to his formula. You must add the right amount of rice cereal to his bottle. If you don't add enough cereal, you won't help the reflux, and if you add too much cereal, he won't be able to get anything out of the bottle.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Teaspoon

Instructions

    • 1

Add formula and water to your baby's bottle. Take note of how much formula is in the bottle.

    • 2

Open the rice cereal and use a teaspoon to measure out 1 tsp. of cereal.

    • 3

Add the rice cereal to the bottle. Add 1 tsp. of cereal for every additional 2 oz. of formula. For example, if you added 6 oz. of formula to the bottle, you would add 3 tsp. of cereal.

    • 4

Attach a nipple to the bottle and shake the bottle a few times to mix the milk and cereal. The formula-cereal mixture is now ready for your baby.
