Difference Between Good Start Gentle Plus & Protect Plus

Choosing a formula for your baby can be a daunting task. You want to give your baby optimal nutrition, but you also want to ensure whatever formula you feed your baby will not upset her sensitive tummy. Gerber Good Start has two formulas, Good Start Gentle Plus and Good Start Protect Plus, which have a slight difference. Good Start Gentle Plus has a special blend of vitamins that Good Start calls Nutriprotect, while Good Start Protect Plus has what Gerber calls Immuniprotect.

  1. Nutriprotect

    • Gerber's Nutriprotect, found in Good Start Gentle Plus, contains a blend of zinc and vitamins C, E and A. These vitamins are to ensure a healthy immune system for your baby. Special prebiotics have been added to the formula for digestive health. Gerber states that these prebiotic fibers are similar to prebiotics found in breast milk, the recommended food for infants.

    Immuniprotect

    • Gerber's Immuniprotect is found in Good Start Protect Plus and was developed after Good Start Gentle Plus. It contains zinc and vitamins C, E and A, just like Good Start Gentle Plus. The difference is that Good Start Protect Plus contains probiotic cultures. These probiotic cultures are known as Bifidobacterium lactis, or Bifidus BL for short, and they are live and active. These cultures are so important because they are the cultures most found in the digestive tract of breastfed infants. Gerber claims Protect Plus will offer your baby advanced immune system support.

    Special Considerations

    • Since Good Start Protect Plus contains live and active cultures, it is important to take care when heating your baby's formula. Gerber warns that heating your baby's formula above 100 degrees could potentially damage Bifidus BL, which would mean your baby would not receive the full benefit of the active cultures. You do not want to warm your baby's formula too much anyway because you could burn your baby's mouth.

    Comfort Proteins

    • Both Good Start Gentle Plus and Good Start Protect Plus contain what Gerber calls Comfort Proteins. Comfort Proteins are whey proteins that have been broken down. Broken down proteins are easier for a baby to digest than whole proteins. Gerber asserts that comfort proteins prevent spit-up, fussiness and gas in babies. When you see a Good Start formula with the word "Plus" in the name, it contains comfort proteins.
