How to Freeze Baby Food
Making your own baby food is simple and allows you to know exactly what your baby is eating. You'll also save money since you don't need to buy commercially prepared purees from the store. Baby food can be made in bulk in advance and then frozen, which allows you to take a small portion out during feedings and reduces the amount of waste. Properly freeze baby food made ahead of time to ensure it is safe and nutritious for your baby.
Things You'll Need
- Fresh fruits or vegetables
- Food processor
- Ice cube tray
- Plastic wrap or aluminum foil
- Freezer bags
- Permanent marker
Instructions
Wash, peel and cook the food. According to experts at WebMD, steaming or microwaving is the ideal preparation method because it keeps most of the nutrients in the food. You can also bake or roast fruits and vegetables if you prefer. Puree in a food processor with a small amount of liquid such as water, formula or breast milk until you reach the desired consistency. Older babies that can handle mushier foods might not need any liquid added. Spoon or pour the puree into ice cube trays. Avoid overfilling. Each cube is equal to approximately 1 ounce of baby food. Cover the ice cube tray with a lid, clear plastic wrap or aluminum foil and put it in the freezer. Remove the individual cubes from the tray and put them in freezer bags to save space and free up your trays for making other baby food. Label the freezer bag with what is inside it and the date. Homemade baby food can be kept frozen for up to three months, but for best results, use within one month of storage.
