What Are the Dimensions of a Baby Bed?
There are several sleeping options for children under the age of three. Throughout the infant and early toddler years, children may sleep in a bassinet, cradle, crib or toddler bed. When deciding what bed and mattress to buy, it is important to be aware of standard sizes. Although it is normal for baby mattresses to vary slightly in size, they should never deviate from the standard size by more than a few inches.

Crib
-
A crib is a stationary baby bed that has bars on all four sides. It is the largest type of bed appropriate for an infant and can be used during the toddler years as well. The standard crib mattress size is 51 1/8 inches long, 27 inches wide and 4-6 inches deep. Make sure that the mattress you purchase fits snugly into your crib, as a poorly fitting mattress can be dangerous to the baby.
Cradle
-
A cradle is similar to a crib, but is typically more narrow. Additionally, many cradles are designed to rock rather than remain stationary. Cradle mattresses are less standardized and may come in a number of dimensions. Cradles on the large side can measure 36 inches long by 18 inches wide, while small cradles may be 12 inches long by 28 inches wide. Due to the lack of size standardization, it may be preferable to purchase a cradle that includes a mattress.
Bassinet
-
A bassinet is a small baby bed typically used for newborns. Most bassinets are made from wicker. Although some are elevated, many have no frame and can be easily moved from room to room. Like the cradle, mattresses for bassinets come in a number of sizes. Most bassinnet mattresses are 29-32 inches long and 13-17 inches wide. Due to these variations it may be best to purchase a bassinet that includes a mattress.
Toddler Bed
-
Most babies make the switch to a toddler bed between the ages of one and three. Toddler and crib mattresses are the same size, with the standard measurement being 51 1/8 inches long and 27 inches wide. The advantage of a toddler bed over a crib is that it allows the child to feel more independent and helps him to transition to a regular bed. Smaller and lower to the ground than a twin bed, toddler bedframes often have rails on either side.
