Crafts for One-Year-Olds

At the age of one year, most babies are interested in short, creative crafts. Usually, the messier the craft, the more entertaining it is. Making crafts at this age helps babies develop both creativity and fine motor skills, and craft time can be used to teach colors, shapes and letters. Be sure to use non-toxic craft supplies, and always supervise one-year-olds during craft time.

  1. Fall Finger Paint Tree

    • Babies love to play in paint. Creating a fall finger paint tree is a hands-on way to teach fall colors. Draw a large, brown tree trunk with branches on a piece of white poster board. Use non-toxic craft paints in orange, yellow, red and brown for the leaf colors. Show the child how to use her fingers to dot the paint all over the branches to create leaves.

    Shopping Cart Collage

    • One-year-olds love to stick things onto objects. Making a shopping cart collage filled with pictures of food is a good time to talk about healthy foods. Draw a large shopping cart on a piece of white poster board. Cut out pictures of food from magazines and add tape or glue to the back. Let the baby stick the foods to the picture of the cart.

    Pudding Art

    • Edible paint is fun for babies since they can paint with it and eat it. Add a few drops of neon food coloring to vanilla pudding to create many different colors of edible paint. Let the baby use her fingers and hands to create a whimsical work of art on a piece of white craft paper. The neon colors will stand out brightly against the white background.

    Snack Mosaic

    • One-year-olds love snacking on finger foods. Turn snack time into craft time by providing bowls of various colorful snacks like Froot Loops cereal and Goldfish crackers. Use peanut butter for the glue. Give the child a white paper plate and show her how to dip the snacks into the peanut butter and stick them onto the plate. When done, you will have snack time and craft time complete with a snack mosaic to display.
