How to Use a Maya Wrap

Wearing a baby can meet the needs of both baby and parent, because the baby receives desired snuggling and you can care for your baby while having your hands free for other tasks. The Maya Wrap is one type of baby carrier that features fabric and a double ring for securing the fabric into the sling. Once you know how to thread and wear the Maya Wrap, you can carry your baby comfortably.

Things You'll Need

  • Maya Wrap

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Maya Wrap

    • 1

Grasp the rings of the sling in one hand and the other end of the sling in the other hand with the tags on each end facing toward each other. Check the fabric between the two ends to ensure you haven̵7;t twisted it.

    • 2

Insert your hand through the rings and grasp the other end of the fabric with this hand. Pull the fabric through the rings and then separate the two rings. Without twisting the fabric, thread the tail of the fabric over the first ring and under the second ring, in belt-threading fashion. This creates a pouch of fabric.

    • 3

Pull the tail of the fabric through the rings to make it roughly even with the pouch. Arrange the fabric threaded through the rings by spreading it neatly and finding the edges of the fabric. Finding the fabric edges is necessary to enable you to place your baby in the sling.

    • 4

Place the sling on your body by slipping one arm through it and placing it over your head. Position the rings at the front of the opposite shoulder. Make sure the fabric lays flat on your back. The pouch of the sling should extend from your armpit to your hip without twisting. This is where you will place your baby.

    Basic Carry

    • 5

Hold your baby against your chest with his head near the shoulder without the rings. Slip your hand under the sling from the bottom and reach up to support your baby. With this hand supporting your baby, move your other hand down to the sling and pull it up and around your baby̵7;s body. Situate the fabric of the sling around your infant to make it even with his neck.

    • 6

Place one hand on your baby and the other hand on the tail of the sling. While you support your baby̵7;s weight with your hand, tug on the tail of the sling near the rings to adjust the fabric and make it comfortably tight to hold your baby. Pulling on the inner edge of the tail tightens the fabric across the top of your baby̵7;s body and pulling on the middle fabric of the tail tightens the fabric across the center of your baby̵7;s body. Pulling on the outer edge of the tail tightens the fabric across the bottom of your baby.

    • 7

Check your baby̵7;s position to ensure safety. Your baby̵7;s chin should not be down against her chest or she could experience breathing difficulty. Your baby̵7;s legs should be separated in a frog position, facing against your body. Your baby̵7;s face should be free of fabric that could interfere with breathing. The sling should support your little one̵7;s head, and she should feel secure and snug in the sling. You should not make the fabric so tight that it interferes with her breathing. If anything about your baby̵7;s position in the sling seems incorrect, fix it immediately.
