Egypt Birth Certificate Information
Obtaining an Egyptian birth certificate involves several forms. Egyptian government considers any child born to an Egyptian father to be a citizen even if they were not issued an Egyptian birth certificate. Egyptian citizens living in another country must write to the Egyptian consulate asking for specific forms regarding the birth.
-
Requirements
-
For a child to be eligible for an Egyptian Birth Certificate they must prove the citizenship of the mother and/or father. If the mother is Egyptian, but the father is not, the child must have been born after 2005 to be considered eligible for citizenship.
If the father is Egyptian, the child will automatically be an Egyptian citizen, regardless of whether or not they have obtained a birth certificate from Egypt.
Children
-
If in another country, the parents will have to write to the consulate requesting form No. 26, which is the Birth Certificate Form. This should be done before the child's first birthday. The returned form will require the parents to prove their Egyptian citizenship.
Cost
-
The request for form No. 26 should include a money order or cashier check (personal checks are not permitted) for $30.00 (as of 2010), payable to "Egyptian Consulate". A self addressed and stamped envelope should be included for the consulate to return the proper forms.
Processing
-
After the form is received, the first page must be completed and returned with the country's issued birth certificate to be revised and then returned to the sender. A copy of the parent's passports should be included, as well as a marriage certificate if applicable. If the mother has officially changed her religion to Islam, the certificate declaring the change in religion should be included. Another prepaid self addressed envelope should be included for return documents. The documents mailed to the consulate will be sent to the Egyptian Ministry of Interior Affairs, and they will issue the birth certificate as they do for children born in Egypt. They will send it back to the consulate, who will return it to the parents.
Child's First Birthday
-
If the child is over the age of 1 year, the previous steps must be completed, however, only the birth registration number will be delivered to the parents. When the number arrives approximately 3 months after requested, a second cashier check or money order will need to be paid to the consulate in the amount of $20.00 for a second form (No. 40), which the consulate will send to the Ministry of Interior of Affairs to issue a birth certificate. This certificate will be returned to the consulate, who will return it to the parents. The process can take more than six months.
