A List of the Main Things a Baby Needs in a Year
Having a baby is one of life's most wonderful experiences. If you are trying to get pregnant, or are already expecting, you may want to make a list of the things that your baby will need during her first year of life. Baby necessities can add up before you know it, so good preparation is essential.

Feeding
-
During the first year of your baby's life, you will need to feed her often. The first several months, your baby eats only formula or breast milk. Breast milk is the more economical option and, according to the National Resources Defense Council, it's also the most complete nutrition for your baby. Once the baby reaches 4 to 6 months of age, you can introduce solid foods into his diet. Aside from baby food, you will also need baby bottles, bibs, small spoons, plastic bowls, sippy cups and a high chair.
Clothing
-
Some essential pieces of clothing include onesies, socks, zip-up sweaters, pull-on pants and pajamas. Avoid clothing with choking hazards such as buttons. You shouldn't purchase too many clothes before your baby's birth. Buying clothes as the baby grows is a better alternative because her weight will increase rapidly. When buying clothes, purchase the size for a baby that is three months older. This way, they will last a while. Look for clothing that opens at the crotch so you can change diapers easily. Elastic waistbands also allow your growing baby to wear the clothes for a longer period of time and be comfortable.
Diapers
-
A newborn baby may need up to 12 diaper changes per day. According to FamilyEducation.com, you should expect to spend at least $1,000 per year on diapers alone. Using cloth diapers may can be more economical, but if you wash the diapers yourself, be aware that your water bill and the amount of money you spend on detergent will increase. Additionally, you will also need plenty of baby wipes.
Sleeping
-
Babies sleep a lot; a newborn baby can sleep more than 16 hours per day. A sturdy crib with a firm mattress is essential. If your baby is cosleeping with you, she will still need a place to take naps during the daytime. Getting a bassinet is another option because you can easily transport it to the location you desire. Regardless of which kind of bed you provide for your baby, it should be cleared of pillows and toys while she is sleeping. You should purchase several fitted sheets for when baby has an accident.
Transportation
-
During the first year of your baby's life, you will most likely not leave the house without a stroller. Choose a stroller according to your individual needs. Some strollers have everything from extra storage space to cup holders, while the more casual umbrella strollers are light and easily portable but have less storage space. If you prefer your hands free while maneuvering with your baby, you can invest in a baby carrier, which allows your baby to snuggle up close to you. You will also need an age-appropriate car seat. The seat should be padded, and you should be able to easily place and secure your baby in it. Believe it or not, car seats have expiration dates. Make sure that the car seat you buy is not older than five years from its manufacturing date.
