How to Tell If My Baby Will Be Born With Blue Eyes

In the future, it may be possible to know everything about our future babies before they are even born. Until then, we have to rely on the basic laws of genetics to make predictions about what our children might look like and what sorts of traits they may inherit from their parents. If you are curious what the probability is of your child being born with blue eyes, you can use a Punnett Square to create a rudimentary model.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of paper
  • Pen
  • Eye colors of parents

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a large pound sign on the paper with a pen. The pound sign, when divided up, makes nine smaller squares. Leave the square in the top left corner empty.

    • 2

Determine the respective eye color genotypes for the mother and father. The gene that determines blue eye color is called recessive and is designated by a lower case letter. In this case we'll use (b). Other eye colors such as brown and green are determined by dominant genes and are designated by capital letters. In this case, we'll use (B). Both the mother and father have two copies of these genes, called alleles, that they received from their parents.

    • 3

Write in the genotype for the eye color of the mother in the squares in the top middle and top right corners. If she has two dominant brown or green alleles, write B in both. If she has one dominant brown and one recessive blue allele, write B in one and b in the other. If her eyes are blue, she has two recessive alleles, so write b in one and b in the other.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 to determine the genotype for the eye color of the father and place the results in the middle left and bottom left squares. This should leave four empty squares between the listed eye colors.

    • 5

Line up the columns above and to the left of each square, combine the two options, then write the results in each of the four squares. You should have two letters in each of the four squares. Each square represents 1 of 4 options of eye color that the child could have and each square has an equal probability of occurring. In every square where there there is a capital letter (BB or Bb), the child will have brown eyes. In squares with (bb), the child will have blue eyes. The ratio of these two options will determine the likelihood that the child will be born with blue eyes. For instance, if there are two squares with Bb and two with bb, the child will have a 50% chance of having blue eyes.
