How to Pre-rinse a Diaper in the Toilet

Before disposable diapers arrived in the 1960s, cloth diapers were the norm. Today, in 2011, concern over the environment and allergies to certain diaper materials has lead some parents to choose washable, cloth diapers for their babies. The advantages of using cloth diapers and washing them yourself include reducing environmental waste and saving money. The drawback to cloth diapers is convenience. Unlike disposables, heavily or solid-soiled cloth diapers require pre-rinsing before laundering to avoid circulating solid human waste in your washing machine, not to mention reducing the odor of your diaper pail.

Things You'll Need

  • Diaper sprayer
  • Disposable rubber gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Empty any solid waste from the diaper into the toilet and flush before putting on your rubber gloves for the pre-rinse.

    • 2

Hold the diaper inside the toilet bowl by a dry corner. Rinsing the diaper inside the toilet bowl keeps back-splatter in the toilet, instead of distributing waste particles around your bathroom.

    • 3

Spray the most heavily soiled area of the diaper until the stain is minimal. Change holding corners if necessary to clean a different area.

    • 4

Wring the diaper inside the toilet bowl with your hands to remove excess water or if that's too unappealing, simply toss the saturated diaper directly into the pail.
