How to Work at Home with a Baby

If you work at home, you have the best of two worlds. You can keep your career and spend the days with your precious little one. That doesn't mean it's easy, however. With plenty of planning -- and lots of flexibility -- it can be done. Once you get your routine going, both you and your baby will be happy and content, and you'll be able to get your work done and spend quality time with your child.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your work hours. You'll probably be able to get the most work done if you schedule your working hours early in the mornings before your baby wakes up, during the day when he's napping or at night after he goes to bed. Schedule your working hours at the same times each day and you'll also get more work done, notes BabyCenter.

Hire a babysitter. If you can't get your work done while your baby is sleeping, hire someone to come care for him while you work. This will prevent disruptions if you're on a conference call and it will allow you to get your work done more quickly because you're not stopping to change a diaper or comfort a crying child.

    • 3

Create a safe area for baby near your work area. If your babysitter can't come one day or if you can't afford to pay a sitter, this play area can be a lifesaver. Set up a playpen to keep your baby safe and contained. Include toys and board books. Keep a bottle handy so you can simply pick your baby up, feed him and then get back to work. Have diapers and wipes on hand, too.

Schedule family time. If you don't set aside certain times to feed your baby, put him down for his nap or spend time playing, chances are you'll get wrapped up in your work and let quality time fall by the wayside.
