Scalp Eczema in Babies

Scalp eczema is common in babies, especially newborns. The condition may be unsightly and cause worry in new parents, but it's usually harmless. In some babies, certain substances, whether dietary or household, irritate the skin and cause the eczema. Other babies just have sensitive skin and are genetically predisposed to eczema.

  1. Types

    • There are many types of eczema. According to Harvard Health Publications, scalp eczema in babies is usually the result of seborrheic dermatitis, which doctors consider to be a form of eczema.

    Identification

    • Seborrheic dermatitis appears as scaly bumps on the scalp and is often called cradle cap. It appears as dandruff in adults. Other types of eczema have a similar appearance, but are itchy or appear red and bumpy.

    Causes

    • According to William Sears, M.D., cradle cap is thought to be caused by the overproduction of oil glands on the scalp's skin. The glands produce an overabundance of oily sebum that cakes on the skin, resulting in scaly cradle cap.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Cradle cap usually improves with age but can be treated at home. Rub vegetable oil in your baby's hair and wait 15 minutes. Use a hairbrush to gently brush (not break) away the flakes.

    Warning

    • Always have a health care provider examine your baby's condition to rule out an allergic reaction or rash.
